Putting in long days, the therapists worked with the children and provided family members with detailed training so that the therapy could be continued at home. Counseling was an essential component of the care and was received by every child and his/her parents. Equally important were the exams, treatment and oral hygiene training conducted by the dental surgeon. A majority of them had cavities, making the oral health training and toothbrushes and toothpaste they received even more important.
Several of the patients were referred for additional surgery by Interplast to further correct ongoing problems. But the medical team also decided that four of the patients had successfully mastered the techniques they had been taught--and they were discharged. They will be followed and evaluated by Interplast’s team to check for any changes in speech patterns until they reach adulthood.
