We lose a lot in translation. Literally. In an attempt to communicate pain level with the patients, I was teaching them “Thumbs up” and “Thumbs down” signs. It was much simpler than trying to explain the whole pain scale thing without an interpreter.
Well………… it seems that here the thumbs up sign means something like ”I don’t care about you, I can’t be bothered with you”. Whoops! Thankfully a smile is a universal symbol...

I understand that sometimes you have problems communicating with people in Bangladesh where you came on the trip. I work as a Chief Officer on ships and i stay in Bangladesh for at least 4 months each year. During this period I practically have very few things to do. I would like to help you out with the work of interpretor. Please communicate with me on my e-mail address if you ever come to Bangladesh again with similiar voluntery work. If I am at home, I will be more than happy to help you with the work of interpretor.
