Marco is 26 years old and had been at the hospital for three months after he was badly burned by a forest fire in 2005. He was working as an educational assistant in a school when the fire broke out in the area surrounding the school. Being selfless, Marco saved two students (a 16 and 17 year old) from the flames, yet was badly burned on his arms in doing so. When I went on the ward to talk to him, his mother, with her toothless smile, beamed with pride as she confirmed his story.
Marco has had a couple of surgeries since his first stay in the hospital and was back again for another skin graft on his hand. He's hoping to go back to work at the school during the week and continue to help his family in the fields (where they grew corn, cocoa beans and fruit) on the weekend. Marco is also a dedicated son, as his family lives 6 hours from Cusco and several hours away from his home.
He was truly our hero.
