Yesterday was clinic day. On the first day of each volunteer surgical team trip all of the pre-screened patients come in to see the doctors. Each child is evaluated based on their age, weight, potential impact on their life, risk level, complexity of the procedure and current health. Generally it is best to see the youngest children first, followed by the older ones. This is because younger patients have less complications and a greater chance for a fundementally life-changing surgery.
In this video, Dr. Janet Volpe, the team leader examines a patient who needs a revision of a previous cleft repair. Janet is a pediatrician, and has a real comforting nature that puts the children at ease.
